The Night Beach

The Night Beach

The sky was clear that night
and we’d hoped to see
the northern lights, though
you had it on good report that
the southern display was better.

A bit of a moot point, anyway,
as we were no where near
the Antipodes where water drains
in the opposite direction
and some birds don’t bother
to fly. By the time we rounded
the point, following the beach path

to the lighthouse, we saw
pre-dawn seagulls lift over the waves
and what illumination there was flashed
from white underbellies. It was
a sight to behold, even if we
missed the magnetic Auroras.

We were electrified enough as
it was, slipping down behind
the shelter of a sand dune,
pale limbs ghostly in the dark.
