Teen Crush

Now that I think about it,
I don’t remember seeing any
fog when I was in Hawai’i.
That was a lifetime ago,

though I do recall rain
storms that rushed at us, coming
up the beach every afternoon

at 5. If I’d bothered to wear
a watch I could have set it
by the squalls’ regularity.

We’d let sunburned skin cool
in the drops, then wander

off to get dinner. I wish
I could remember more but
that was when I was so in love

with a boy who would proceed
to crush my heart for the next decade
that I missed much of what

was right in front of me.
